Do I need to cut down on the Gluten?

10.31.2009 · Posted in Personal Updates

What the hell is gluten, anyway? It sounds like something undigestible, that might get stuck in my esophagus.

Those that are anti-gluten will tell you that description is pretty much dead-on. I poked around a bit after reading about gluten on some other blogs. I still don’t understand completely, but basically if you can avoid wheat products and sauces you’re on the right track. I’m going to have to ping a family member that works as a nutritionist for a better explanation.

As for me, I was looking into reasons why I get urgent, watery bowel movements two or three afternoons per week. Gluten was one possibility. I didn’t avoid bread this week since my lunch most days consists of a sandwich, but I did keep cheese off the sandwiches and didn’t have any issues that required the tight-cheeked walk of shame. So maybe its just a lactose sensitivity.

More research definitely in order.

  • I find gluten intolerance in almost every single one of my clients with digestive complaints. Celiac's is actually a full blown autoimmune condition whereas gluten intolerance is a reference to the inability to digest it properly.

You don't need a biopsy either. There are many other tests that look at protein and immune reactivity to gluten by way of saliva.
  • Consult to an expert therapist or consult a doctor about this, he will really suggest a better solutions towards this and you will then finally get the hit what's gluten is?

Both my kids and my ex wife are gluten intolerant - known as coeliac.
This is a surprisingly common condition - get yourself checked out by a doctor - the only really sure way of confirming it, is with a biopsy.
Probably isn't coeliac - more likely if you have history of it in family - signs of it can be anemia and lack of energy, as the intolerance reaction means that your gut cannot absorb nutrients effectively.
