Five Bite Diet

02.15.2008 · Posted in Diet

Came across this one this evening: Taking several bites out of eating

The crux of the Five Bite Diet is, skip breakfast, have five bites of something with protein at lunch, five bites at dinner. Pretty simple. But it sure does risk missing a whole bunch of nutrients.

I don’t think it’s for me.

Update:

Wow, seeing a teenager commenting that she’s going to try it really shook me up. I posted this because I don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t often recommend against a specific idea (I think Kimkins was the only thing so far), and usually take the passive-aggressive approach like I did above by saying it isn’t for me.

So, let me be clear – it isn’t for YOU, either!

Think about it this way: How many calories can you get into one bite of something moderately healthy – a piece of chicken, maybe? 100, tops? So, 500+500=1000.

That isn’t enough, and isn’t safe for very long! Growing bodies need PROTEIN and VITAMINS and even some CARBS and FAT. Balance it, keep it in moderation, but don’t try this STARVATION diet.

WHEN YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT THE 5 BITE DIET IS GREAT BECAUSE YOU CAN EAT THE SAME THINGS OTHERS ARE EATING AT THE RESTURANT.I USED IT FOR 4 WEEKS, LOST 15 LBS AND DID EAT OATMEAL,CHERRIOS ETC IF I NEEDED SOMETHING IN BETWEEN.NOW I AM JUST WATCHING MY AMOUNTS THAT I EAT A LITTLE BETTER.I AM 59 YRS OLD
  • crystoria
hmmm...well, i've been doing the 5 bite diet for 3 days and it may sound funny to you but i am not starving. as soon as i wake up though, i take 4 bites of toast usually with almond butter and a bite of banana and that seems to be enough to stop the rumbling tummy noises, then i can have some coffee. at lunch, 5 big bites of a super healthy salad with romaine, cashews, onions, grapes, and red peppers is quite satisfying. last night i made a venison pot pie and had 5 big bites of that. i vary it a bit because i like coffe in the morning and if on an empty stomach, it gives me cramps...i try to keep it at around 20 bites. and surprisingly, i have more energy to dance and run and don't feel tired anymore like i did when my tummy was too full. i think if you can discipline yourself to make healthy food choices, anyone will be successful with this diet.
  • As for the "lack of nutrients" argument...

    Try vitamins.
  • "Angie said that at first she thought she would starve to death and later felt fine...that is how anorexia feels too!!! you start out really hungry and after a few weeks the thought or sight of food makes you feel sick."

No, it's your body saying it doesn't need any more food, it has enough to live on. Now that it has no food in the tummy to work on it will now work on the fat on your body to live on.

Anorexia doesn't feel like that. Anorexia's in the mind, it's an illness.

It's like rape having nothing to do with sex. Anorexia has nothing to do with food, it has everything to do with poor body image and seeing something that isn't there (thinking you're obese when you actually only weight 80 pounds)

It's a good thing that your stomach isn't begging you for food, it's good that you feel fine.
  • DeboraBrod
This is really insane! How could someone survive only with 10 bites of something, daily? You shouldn't have posted this article, without taking in consideration that there are people who are so desperate to lose weight that they would really do anything. I know five girls who used Crestor and after making cholesterol exams, blood sample exams, the doctors said that they were healthier than ever. And they lost so much weight by eliminating the cholesterol. Next time you post like this, make sure to specify it's a fake diet.
  • RoyGervase
I wouldn't recommend such a diet to anyone, especially teenagers that are still developing. Although it's referred to as a diet it is in fact a form of starvation that will have a disastrous impact on anyone's health if pursued for a longer period of time. The body needs it's nutrients and ten bites a day just won't do it. I recommend that you eat almost everything but exercise accordingly. Being lazy and losing weight just don't go together.
  • Interesting idea, the 5 bite diet. LOL like you it's not for me. I love to eat and I love great food. It takes knowing what causes you to store fat and what increases your motabilism causing you to burn fat. I found just a place and not only does it have that but it also has a lot of very easy and fast recipes. I call it my smart diet. Thanks again
  • lovinlifewithmykids
I have been on the 5 bite diet for two weeks now and it is the only diet I have ever been on that I have been able to stick to. I am 26 with 3 kids and I have never felt better! This is not a starvation diet. I have seen nothing but benefits, because I follow the diet properly. I take a small range of multivitamins (recommended by my doctor who I visit once a week to check my progress to ensure I am not harming my body) and I ensure that my five bites (twice a day) have 3 bites of high protein, 1 bite of vegetables, and 1 bite of anything I wish. My energy has gone through the roof!!! I actually run around the yard with my kids and I don't get tired for a long time. I sleep better than I have in years and have had several medical problems disappear--such as problems with the constant (now non-existent) knee pain I have suffered with for 5 years and my back pain from carrying the extra weight is now gone. This diet is simply following the same diet as a person who has undergone gastric bypass. People don't criticize them for not eating "like they are supposed to". Those people don't starve to death do they? And no, I don't feel hungry all the time because I am able to drink as many zero calorie fluids as I like including zero calorie sodas, water, diet green tea, black coffee, and a range of crystal light products, etc. I am not putting harmful diet pills in my system--only the nutrients NEEDED. So why don't you try the diet PROPERLY before you start acting like you know what you're talking about.
  • Rachelle
If we are supporting the Lap Band and Gastric Bypass, then we have to support this also. They eat MUCH LESS food before/on and after these surgeries that are not guaranteed to come out alive from! All surgery has it's risks... but to get that done or eat a small amount for a short period of time... doesnt seem like it's too big of a deal... We are taught to accept people as fat, even thou it's life threatening!!! It's not ok for them to get thin and stop risking their lives with surgeries and to use this diet to get there? Shrink their stomach's and appetite's?? It's safer to go on this diet and end the fat than to do the surgeries or stay fat! And anorexia is NOT simply what u eat!! Those people SEE themselves as fat even thou they are underweight! It's a mental disorder! Eating small amounts of food is a SYMPTOM of the eating disorder NOT the actual disease itself!!!
  • Robin
My name is Robin...As of today, June 30 I am back on the 5BD. I have lost a lot of weight with it before...the trouble comes into paradise for me when I have to go to some kind of event that is food centered and really this seems to happen a lot. I know that no one is watching how much food I am eating but honestly I just love to eat and used that as an excuse to go off the diet. When I did cheat on this diet, it would take weeks for me decide to go back on it during which time I would eat like a fool. Allowing yourself to eat like a fool is a bad decision especially if you are overweight!

I am determined to count my bites and lose this weight! This diet works! The best thing about it is that you can eat anything you want. I will update with my progress.

Has anyone tried the subscription to the Slimming Station website?? It costs $50 but it might be the missing piece that I need to stay committed all the way to the finish line.

Me and my daughter started on monday, i was referred to Dr. Lewis after being denied the lap-band. Dr. Lewis sugguested I till my family about the 5bite diet, my daughter wanted to try it she is going to be in a wedding in august and has been trying to lose weight. I think we both are here to give each other support. I guess this is my 3rd day. Hopefully I should be easier tomorrow. From what Dr. Lewis said the dizzy ness and head will go away by tomorrow. Give it a try
  • Jennifer
Hey all, I just wanted to let you know my progress. I started in Jan, it's been. 5 months and i have lost 60 pound. But I couldn't go with out breakfast so I eat 8 bites 3 times a day! I know it sounds like alot but I'm a big girl and I need more food! But it's still working people don't relize how many bites they take! The good part is It works. For the last month I have fell off the bandwagon hard. I began to eat and eat but I am not able to eat as much as I did prior to this diet so I haven't gain any back. The first week is the hardest and rem you must eat the same amount everytime unless your stomach won't get ajested and you will continual to be hungry! Good luck all !

am 15 and I started this diet about a month ago. I have lost 38 lbs. already. It is REALLY a good diet
  • acai, but I don't agree
It sounds like the intention of the plan is portion control. Can't someone derive a formula based on age / height / wt that would best help on portion control

    crazy, otherwhise
  • This plan sounds very risky to me, far better to see a dietician and formulate a long term (healthy) weight loss regime!
  • Cathi
Hey Debra, wow our stats are almost exactly the same... I'm 5'3" & weigh 163. How are you doing on the diet? Just wondering if you've modified it at all? I was thinking of doing 3 meals instead of 2. Then at my goal weight just slowly increase the number of bites.
  • Debra

Hey I would love to hear from anyone and there progress on the 5bd
    frogdlo2000@yahoo.com
  • Debra
I started on the 5bd 1/5/09. I was a little hungry, but not to the point where I though I was starving. I read the book and decided that I had to do something. I have tried numerous diets and I just want this weight off. I am looking forward to hearing about others success stories. I am 5'3" and 161.2. My goal is to lose 40lbs.
  • Lisa A
I'm starting this today:) I'm 5'5" and need to loose about 40 lbs. I hope this works!
  • M&M
After reading your posts, I'm doing it starting tomorrow! I'm really psyched about it. I hope to lose about 30 lbs. (I'd like to lose more). I'd love to hear how everyone else is doing with their weight loss. This diet seems so simple and makes portion size much easier.

    Wish me luck!!
  • Just a note! The smilie with sunglasses in my previous post was the numeral 8 followed by a parenthesis, and shows as the smilie (I'm not trying to hide my size!)
  • Hi Renee!

You don't have to starve to lose the weight. In fact, if youhave significat hunger, it will work against yoru efforts to lose the excess stored fat. I've been very successful with the Zone diet and lifestyle, no hunger involved. I started the Zone almost 14 years ago, lost 100 pounds and 7 pantrs sizes (size 22 to size 8) over the first 2 years, and I've maintained it since. Plus, I eliminated my high blood pressure! My doctor took me off the two high BP meds I was on and I haven't needed them since (years ago, after I lost the wieght). You eat a minimum of 3 generously sized meals and 2 snacks daily with the Zone. It's been great for me and for my whole family!
  • Sally
Welcome all 5BD newbies! I was just really hungry about day 3-5 when I started but hung in there and now I'm not really hungry except when it's time to eat. When I eat I "sit with it..." meaning I really feel the sensation that I ate and my stomach is full and I'm satisfied. Before I just ate really quickly not really tasting anything (except the first few bites) and stopping when my plate was empty. Now tastes/flavors seem very heightened to me. Reminds me of what ex-smokers say about when they quit smoking - that food tastes so much better. Other times when I'm not really hungry (my pseudo-hunger) but want something, I can think and link it to things like someone just really pissed me off or I'm procrastinating because I don't want to clean the kitchen or something. Sometimes I put a little Creamora in my coffee and it seems fine because straight coffee is just too acidic for me and it seems to help. But I only drink about one cup a day in the morning. Those of you that don't have a lot to lose will do this really quickly. I lost ten pounds the first week.

I was talking to a woman who has been naturally thin all her life. She says she has a good metabolism like her father but she has also always eaten very small meals all her life, but she eats whatever she wants. That's what thin people do.
  • Renee
okay Heidi - I'm right there with ya. I've had two back surgeries and maintained my weight for the last two years. I'm 5'6 and 140lbs. This summer I bought a race car and gained 20lbs from fast food and now it's time for it to go. My problem is I love to cook and I know my portions are too large. So my question for you guys is how do I get past starving? Can I drink my coffee with my creamer as I know it at least helps. Going to try and start today. Keep posting your progress cause it is very encouraging!!! Best of luck!!
  • Heidi
Today is the day, after reading the enlightening messages I now have the courage and confidence to give this a try, today is dec 5 2008, I am 5.4 and weigh 140.2 I will keep ya all posted and give results in 1 week.....wish me luck!
  • Yngmomi05
I started this diet about a week ago. I never realized how much I actually ate until I started this diet. And I also just began to realize I was eatting that way because it was something I was used to doing, not because I was acutally hungry. My reason for wanting to start the diet is to loose the 20lbs that I have not lost from having my daughter 3 years ago. So far I have not weighed myself yet, but my pants are bagging in the legs. Good luck everyone!! If anyone wants to keep track with me or just to encourage one another, feel free to email me! Nikster02313@yahoo.com
  • At a (Weight) Loss
I started the diet two weeks ago. I lost 1kg in the first week. (I am 152cm tall and weighed 58kgs when I started). I was slightly disappointed at first because of the small weight loss, but I have gotten over that now, as my belly is looking smaller and that 1kg has made a big difference with my energy levels.

I keep 1kg of butter in the fridge as my motivation and have drawn up a chart to monitor my progress. It's my second week, I still feel hunger pangs, but I have realised it only happens when I am bored. I still have to weigh in for the second week, hopefully i have lost 1kg more.

i hear about this diet on 11/19/08 and my wt was 270.00 i have been on it four days and i'm 265 .00 i'm happy with that that may not be a lot to some and i know some will say that just water wt . its wt gone to me ... i plan to stick with this diet and try to do it in a safe manor... people that dont have a weight issue should no discourage us that do if your not going to try it let us ... these are some of the thing i have been doing to stay positive about this diet so that i dont fail like i have with the rest.

keep a journal(i use to think this was a waste of time) it your tell how you feel about you be truthful
drink plenty of fluids (a slice of lime or lemon helps
for those of you that believe in God pray and ask him to guide you while on this diet(i asked was this of him and should it be something i should be doing )

the only thing i have to say to the younger children and teen talk to "your parents" and tell then how you feel about your weight ask for help.

my daughter was also over weight as a teen she was 14 and 190 so she asked me (i was more healthy at the time 160) to fix her plate and give her her snack and that was all she ate with the exception of her lunch at school she has been 110 for five years now ... so i know if i can do it for her i can do it for myself

let encourage each other ... does anyone know of a website that we can get support or start one to suport each other
  • Jessica
Today is my 3rd day on the diet. My first night I to had a headache. Like Amber I get headaches often, so I don't know if it is from the diet or not. I feel fine now and not hungry and it is only my 3rd day. I saw it on the morning show and I couldnt wait to start. My email is jlr218_330@yahoo.com, Amber!
  • JZ
I've been on this diet for 9 days and have lost 10lbs. I'm not that big, but I want to get fit once and for all. This works IF you have the will and you're probably stronger than you think.

You won't realize just how much you overeat until you give this a try. It's unbelievable! It can be tough at times, but, those tough moments always pass as you learn to focus on your goal. It's about just getting it done. Period.

If you want to reset your 'system' and more importantly reset your attitude towards food then this may be what you're looking for.

Also, when I do have my 5 bites I drink a good bit of water as well. Another aspect of this is you really appreciate food so much more. Every bite is enjoyable, you're not mindlessly shoving it in and waiting to be stuffed.

Dr. Lewis and this 5BD have changed my whole outlook on eating.
  • Sally
Hi Amber - that's great! How many bites could your Mom eat a day when she first had her surgery and losing? Just curious. I, too, investigated lap band and stumbled on this program and it made complete sense to me. I didn't want to have major surgery.

I've been on 5bd for about 3 months now. I know it's a long journey and I have a lot to go, but just taking it one day at a time. The first 3-4 four days were pretty difficult but it got easier. I soon learned how many times I wanted to eat just because I was anxious, procrastinating, bored or angry at someone - not because I was hungry. Now I am hardly ever hungy - just when it's time for my meal. It's quite amazing.

And you can e-mail me, too, if you're interested. Let me know.
  • Bonadea
I started today, email me bonadea99@hotmail.com
  • Amber
Well I'm checking in! 1 day done many more to go. I made it. It really wasn't as tough as I thought it was going to be. The only thing was that I had a headache last night. I occasionally get headaches anyway. So it will be interesting to see if this is a regular side effect. I am so desperate to get this extra weight gone. I am hoping to find a online buddy to track progress with. I was going to register at the web sight, but it's fifty dollars.
  • Amber
As it being anorexia this isn't a diet recommended for the little guy. It's for us. The ones with our own 3 month supply of food storage. The one that's making you feel slugish, depressed, weak, cranky, tired all the time. The doctor wants you to do this until you reach your right weight that is healthy for your height. You know with the gastric bypass you can't go back. My mom's surgery was 11 years ago. She still gets sick if she eats more than 15-20 bites depending on the food. Atleast if you decide it sucks you can quit. When you lose your weight you can increase your 5 bites to more to maintain your weight. It just makes sense
  • Amber
I was watching Mike and Juliet on Tuesday and there it was. I am starting this diet today. so far I am seeing that fluids are helping me not be hungry. I was researching the lap band and gastric bypass this last week. I am 5'4" and weigh 181 lbs. Which is not big enough for surgery. My mom had the bypass and it was great for her. This just makes sense. It's much better than the recovery after a surgery. I also had a friend that has a gastric bypass too. If she eats to much she gets so sick. I would much rather try this. This was just the thing I've been looking for.
  • Jamie
I am a little nervous about this diet, i guess because it sounds too simple, everyone keeps saying they had a little trouble on the first week, how much does that slow down your progress?
  • nia
I wanna try this diet ./...I have been trying to lose weight on so many other diets...I'll try anything not 2b depressed.im only 5' 4 and weigh193,I feel sluggish all the time,I can't wait.
  • At a (Weight) Loss
Thank you for your most helpful comments, Sally.
  • Sally
Hi Loss - you can eat whatever you want but only five bites and everything counts (even carrots and lettuce). Dr. Lewis says in order to gage what five bites are - eat a regular 2.07 oz. Snickers bar. I always eat some kind of protein like a chicken sausage (apple/ginger) on a hot dog bun - but then I only eat five bites and throw away the rest (about one bite). I had curry chicken with rice last night - five bites. I always crave healthy things with protein. I rarely just eat a Snickers bar unless I am on the run and in my car or something. I take a multivitamin everyday. It's strange because I've stopped craving donuts and chocolate chip cookies, but I know I can have that if I want. FYI - the book "Why Weight Around" is available on Amazon.com. It is brief and to the point. It is extremely helpful and explains everything.
  • At a (Weight) Loss
From what I have read from all the comments, this diet is by far the most convenient and cost effective diet I have come accross. It is very difficult to prepare three different meals twice a day, everyday, as food for my hubby is different to food for my toddlers, not to mention my "diet food".

This way I can just have a smaller portion of whatever everyone else is eating. The problem is, I don't have access to the book. Can anyone kindly give me more information on this diet. I know that one should have no breakfast, and only 5 bites of food for lunch, then again at dinner. Are there any guidelines on how big a bite is? Does a vegetable, e.g. carrot or lettuce count? (I'd much rather eat the chicken and rice if that's the case!) And any other information you feel I need to know. Thanks.
  • Sally
I researched this 5BD diet ad nauseam (so to speak) first -- even attending bariatric surgery symposiums (since I was considering LapBand surgery on my doctor's recommendation) for first-hand information. When I learned from patients that have undergone gastric bypass and LapBand procedures this is exactly how they eat and have lost massive amounts of weight, I was convinced. And they were all so much healthier and happier than they were before. I also learned I didn't want to undergo major surgery.

I have been on the 5BD for about two months and have lost 31 pounds so far. Sometimes I slip and have more than 5 bites and probably could have lost more, but I have learned so much about myself in this process -- especially what mass quantities I ate before that I never really even tasted and I was never really hungry. The feeling of finally controlling what food I eat without it controlling me is remarkable after many years of the tail wagging the dog.

The first week was tough for me, but every day got easier. I still have moments where I need to really focus and keep my eye on the goal because it's usually when I am tired or bored and I just want "something" and am really not physically hungry. It's interesting that I now crave healthy foods and not the sweets I was addicted to. I am now so hyper-aware and now understand how "thin" people eat. I must have been absent that day in class when they taught that -- but, hey -- I'm obviously just a later bloomer and it's never too late to learn.

I encourage you to read the book and make your own judgments. It's not for everyone, but if you want to finally get that monkey of overeating off your back, you will certainly be inspired by what Dr. Lewis has to say.
  • jef
This doctor is my primary doctor. I've read his book and I'm on this eating plan and have lost 22lbs in 2 1/2 months.
I've learned to control my out of control eating patterns and I'm looking better and better each day!
This can be done, your hungry comes under control, and you become wiser about portions.
I encourage you to read the book, and try it! I have not followed it perfectly. If I can't go without breakfast( I usually just have coffee with milk), I eat a light activa yogurt( 70 calories). I then keep up the small portion meals the rest of the day. It can be done, you can adjust you "hungerstat" and lose weight!
I am an RN, I'm very knowledgeable about my eating, and I have no fears about readjusting my portions/calories when I reach my goal.
  • Have any of you heard of Gastric Bypass?
  • I see this leading to much higher incidence of choking as people try and get their money's worth out of their five bites.

But in all seriousness, people want something simple, and this certainly delivers. It's much easier than trying to divine the amount of calories in a restaurant "salad".
  • Joe
The guy who created the diet has said that this diet is not permanent thing it's good try it for few weeks it's pretty much like gastric bypass just without the surgery once you get of the you will learn to portion what you eat. If your a young person don't try this diet your still growing you can easily lose weight than a full grown adult
  • I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone would lose substantial amounts of weight eating just five bites at a meal (Lewis sets an expectation of 13 pounds per week in his book).

How about we check back a year or 5 later before calling it successful?

The site for the diet has the audacity to say "no more fad diets" and lists so many clichés that maybe this is satire after all and I have been fooled.

I though we were over these weird gimmicks?
  • I was referred to the lap band and am being told that I am being referred to this program instead. I am concerned with the hunger pangs, don't you feel hungry all of the time? The reason I was considering lap band is because they physically limit the stomach space, which would leave a "full" feeling. If you only eat 5 bites of food, do you still feel hungry?
  • Steve Smith
I also felt the way most of you do about this diet, My wife was talking about it and I gave her all the same pat lines that you all have here. She made me read the book, Now I understand.

To people that Claim low intake diets will make you fatter, Where the logic, Its just an urban legend.

Fact, you eat 1000 calories but burn 1800 for the day your body will utilize your fat.

Some clam this will be a yo-yo diet. Once you reach your goal weight you slowly increase the number of bites per day until you level out your weight lose/gain.
    No secrets there.

    Think on this.

The bear will pack on several hundred pounds before Hibernating.
When he is done hibernating for 6 months he has used that fat up.

Did he exercise to lose it? Did he eat health to lose it?

No , his normal metabolism while Sleeping burned it off.

I dont know why people freak out about cutting calories drastically for a few months. Its not like its a lifetime deal.

This diet is advocated by modern medicine vie the Gastric Bypass surgery.
You have to eat even less on the Bypass diet.

Why not support those trying out this diet. Its free and Saves the body risky surgery and saves the American people millions of dollars through raising health care costs.

Please Dont perpetuate urban legend and folk lore about dieting .
I was just like you. Knee jerk reaction and all.

Dont comment unless you read the book first. And if you read it and still feel the same way then at least you can oppose it with some authority.

I am not going to say this diet is something you should do long term..however, I lost 30 lbs in 7 weeks using my own modification of this diet....I did the 5 bite diet.. 4 days of the week and then had normal meals, not large, but normal meals for the other 3 days of the week. Now that I have reached a weight that I am comfortable with, I only do it 2 days a week to maintain my weight. (and I have actually lost a couple more pounds in that process) I have not experienced any abnormal side effects to date. So for those of you who only go by what you read...maybe you should get some first hand knowledge of the diet and try it..that way you can really give an unbiased opinion....I would probably agree with most of you that doing this 7 days a week is a bit much..but just modify and make it your own diet as I did and maybe you will write a book someday.

Have any of you heard of Gastric Bypass??? How much food do you think a person that had that surgery can eat??? About 5 bites. How can this diet be unhealthy if this is what a person that staples their stomach can eat? I am doing it and have lost weight, feel great, have all my usual energy and ONLY eat 5 bites at lunch and 5 bites at dinner. The difference here is a thin person needs to eat more than 5 bites to survive. Us fat people can live off our stored fat until it's gone.

Hey this diet is really anorexia!! please don't do this you may loose weight at first but then it will be bad so please think of the consequences. In my case I am not dieting but exercising regularly and having my drink purple which is boosting my immune system as high antioxidant levels boost the immune system, and boundless energy and endurance levels and I get this from purple which is reportedly the strongest anitoxidant punch ever! I guess everyone should try this drink and exercise properly, you check out it's benefits and see it for yourself , www.drinkpurple.com , try it and let me know. But please loose heathly !

this diet IS anorexia to a lesser extreme. Angie said that at first she thought she would starve to death and later felt fine...that is how anorexia feels too!!! you start out really hungry and after a few weeks the thought or sight of food makes you feel sick.

I am 15 and I started this diet about a month ago. I have lost 38 lbs. already. It is REALLY a good diet
  • Chris
I agree 100% with Angie. This is not a diet for everybody, nor is this a diet that promotes anorexia. I have done this diet and lost about 25 lbs. in a month. I have since kept if off for the last two months. What I have gotten out of this diet is self control. I over eat a lot, and while staying close to Dr. Lewis' plan I can now realize that I'm really not that hungry and I don't need to clean my plate. The proportions we Americans eat is absolutely ridiculous. We would be completely healthy and happy with half the amount of food served to us, yet we always tend to want and eat more until we feel sick to our stomach (or maybe just me!!!).
This diet is not something to stay on forever. As Angie did, she modified it a little to help suit her needs better. These are just guidelines, if you are serious about losing weight, give this a try. If five bites is not even close to enough to fill you up, change this program to the six bite diet, or seven bite diet.
In the end, this diet will help you with self control, with eating proper proportions, and will help you know when you are actually full, and not just craving more food because it tastes good.
On another note, the way I do the diet now, after I lost the large portion of weight I initially wanted, is to stick to the diet during the weekdays, not to a "t" but to it's guidelines, and on weekends, I will eat normally, yet in smaller proportions as I did pre-five bite diet.
I know the good old doc says eat anything you want, which is fine, but I found for myself, if I'm going to put the effort into this diet, and have a legitimate goal, then I'm going to try my hardest to eat as healthy as I can in my five bites. I had read on another forum about people talking about choking because of shoving so much food into their mouth because they are only allowed five bites. If you are the type of person to do that, then this diet is not for you...HAVE SOME SELF CONTROL and you will be fine. I used to be quite large myself, and I think there are only a few reasons that are the cause of being fat other than the individual themselves. If we all just watch what we eat, and use whatever method or guidelines that work for us, we would be a much healthier nation! Thanks if you got this far in reading!!!

This diet isn't so bad. Which I made a slight modification. I do eat 5 bites for breakfast, 5 lunch and 5 dinner. The first couple of weeks I literally thought I would starve to death but now I feel fine. I exercise at night and I must say I feel and look much better than I did. I have plenty of energy and knowing how many bites to eat per meal helps me to mentally stop overeating. I like this diet. It may not be for everyone but this is the one for me. I've lost 50 pounds since January.

I'M SO TRYING THIS FOR A MONTH.
  • Chris
thanks Tim... I suppose the fight leaves me speechless. I was under 1000 calories yesterday and today I have had around 330 (so far; it is only 4pm). I struggle with the nights more than the days. I just want to be able to move freely and feel comfortable in my clothes. I guess we can all say that at one time or another. Anyhow, thanks for the encouragement and I wish you the very very best!!!
  • Tim
I don't know that I can help you. I'm right there with you. All I can say is that I'm fighting it every day. Some days I win, some days I lose. But, I'm finally focusing on the long run, and not letting my occasional failures drive me back into compulsive eating.

I can't tell you how to do it, nor what will work for you. You're going to have to figure that out for yourself. And you're right, having just 5 bites will set a person up for a binge later on. Another reason why this diet is just dumb.
  • Chris
so it isn't healthy... fine, but neither is my self-confidence level. Can anyone help me? How about give me the money to eat healthy... and if you say it costs just as much to be unhealthy as it does healthy I will reach through this screen and slap you myself. I hate being fat and I hate not being able to do anything about it. Besides, when someone is fat and out of control they will probably only be able to eat 5 bites for breakfast and then devert to fat-hood again and eat three lunches. Don't be judgemental... just help me. No pills though, I can't stomach that... I would rather just not eat... if only it were that simple!
  • That is one scarey diet! That isn't right for any one.

tia, please please please do NOT do this diet - it is dangerous.
  • Tim
    I agree with you, Caroline.

Tia, DO NOT do this. It isn't safe, especially for growing children.
  • tia
i am 13 yrs old and need alot of help.
this seems to work i am starting 2marow
3 weeks i will get on again and tell ya how it worked
  • I have a special name for that diet. It's called Anorexia.

That is seriously the dumbest thing I have ever heard! That guy starved himself and wrote a book about it! I don't think you should EVER skip breakfast--that's what kick starts your metabolism in the morning. If you seriously only take 10 bites of food a day, your body is going to go into starvation mode and start hanging onto every calorie it can.

I don't claim to know crap about it, but in my humblest of opinions, I still think the best "diet" is the one where you eat lots of tiny meals per day. This keeps the metabolism going, gives you the food you need and the energy you need to also maintain an active lifestyle. Or what about weight watchers? I hear a lot of people have success that way.
  • Geez.. I wont do it... how 5x10 bite.. hehehe
